PSYCHOTHERAPY AND COUNSELLING KINGSTON UPON THAMES, SURREY

WHAT IS COUNSELLING AND PSYCHOTHERAPY ?

Counselling aims to empower people with tools to help them take control of their own life. It provides a regular time for those in distress to explore their feelings and talk about their problems.

Counselling is about listening and offering a safe and reflective space to help make sense of the chaos we find within ourselves and that which surrounds us.

Counselling mainly focuses on particular and current issues that you wish to work on, whereas Psychotherapy is more of in-depth exploration with an aim to deepen your understanding of what makes you you, of the life you live, the choices you have made and the relationships you have formed. This is usually over a longer period of time.

By exploring our feelings and habitual (sometimes unconscious) patterns in a safe therapeutic environment, we begin the journey of deeper self-awareness.
Psychotherapy and Counselling helps us to gain a greater understanding of who we are now, whilst taking control of who we are yet to become, thereby opening the possibility of change.

WHO IS IT FOR?

If you:
  • are experiencing an emotion that seems difficult to comprehend.
  • become overwhelmed by a host of feelings that may include confusion, stress, isolation, fear, anxiety and feeling lost.
  • are questioning this stage in your life, how you got here and what part you have played.
  • feel that you are not living your life to its full potential, feeling that emotional experiences and commitment lack depth and meaning, or feeling that the life you are leading is not yours.

If you find yourself feeling one or more of the above, then psychotherapy and/ or counselling may be of help to you.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing)can be used in conjunction with therapy or indeed by itself.

Originally designed to treat traumatic or "dysfunctional" memories and experiences and their psychological consequences, EMDR has since been increasingly used to treat a wide range of distressing experiences such as anxiety, phobias, panic attacks, panic disorder, pain, etc. Though primarily used for the treatment of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder(PTSD)

Somatic Experiencing engages the body memory to help release trauma in a safe and manageable way.

Both EMDR and Somatic experiencing rely on the body's inert capability of healing itself.

If you feel you have further questions or concerns, I will be very pleased to discuss them with you.
